Windows 11 24H2 made its debut yesterday, but the launch has not been without its challenges, particularly for the gaming community. According to Microsoft’s Windows release health page, two significant gaming-related issues have already come to light. The popular racing game Asphalt 8 is reportedly experiencing occasional crashes following the installation of the update. Additionally, users utilizing a version of the Easy Anti-Cheat application released prior to April 2024 are encountering a ‘MEMORY_MANAGEMENT’ BSOD error.
Compatibility Concerns
Due to these complications, systems running the affected applications are currently placed on compatibility hold, preventing them from accessing the 24H2 update through the built-in Windows Update app. Attempts to upgrade an impacted computer via alternative methods will trigger a warning indicating that the PC is not prepared for the latest version of Windows 11.
In response to these issues, Microsoft, alongside the developers of the affected applications, is actively working on solutions. The company also advises users to update their games, as this may include a compatible version of Easy Anti-Cheat within the game’s update.
The situation has led to significant disruptions, including unexpected reboots and BSODs, prompting Microsoft to implement a Known Issue Rollback (KIR) that automatically removes the update from affected systems. While these challenges present a considerable headache for the tech giant, they are not entirely unexpected. Unlike Apple, which manages a limited range of hardware configurations for macOS, Microsoft must contend with a virtually limitless array of system specifications to ensure compatibility with each update and version of Windows.
Despite efforts to mitigate these issues through the Windows Insider Program, which boasts over 7 million members, it remains a daunting task to cover the diverse hardware configurations across more than 400 million devices running Windows 11.
Nonetheless, it is reassuring to see Microsoft acknowledging these challenges. The expectation is that a fix for the update will be forthcoming in the next few days, allowing Asphalt 8 enthusiasts and online multiplayer fans to return to their gaming experiences on the latest version of Windows 11.
