Windows 11’s new passkey design includes cloud syncing and 1Password integration

Microsoft is set to enhance its passkey support within Windows 11, introducing a redesigned Windows Hello interface that promises a more streamlined user experience. This update allows users to choose how they wish to save their passkeys, with options to sync them to their Microsoft accounts or store them with popular password management solutions like 1Password and Bitwarden.

Seamless Integration with Third-Party Managers

A new API designed for third-party password and passkey managers will enable developers to integrate directly into the Windows 11 ecosystem. This means users can authenticate on their PCs using the same passkeys they utilize on their mobile devices. Currently, some applications allow for this functionality through QR codes and other methods, but Microsoft’s comprehensive support is set to significantly enhance the overall passkey experience on Windows.

Additionally, Microsoft is revamping the Windows Hello prompt, which will now include features for syncing passkeys to Microsoft accounts or saving them in alternative locations. After completing a one-time setup process, users will be able to authenticate with a passkey across multiple Windows 11 devices using facial recognition, fingerprint, or PIN.

Windows Insiders will be the first to experience these new passkey features, which are expected to roll out in the coming months. While it may take some time before all Windows 11 users gain access to this upgraded passkey experience, Microsoft plans to unveil further details during its Windows security sessions at the Authenticate 2024 conference next week.
