Google Messages app gets voice moods feature in beta

Enhanced Messaging Experience with Google Messages

Continuing its commitment to enhance user experience, Google has been methodically introducing a suite of new features to its Google Messages application. These updates, which began their rollout in November of the previous year, have been making their way to users incrementally. In many cases, the beta version of the app serves as a testing ground before the features are polished and released in the final, public version. The latest addition to the beta version is a feature that brings a new dimension to voice messaging: voice moods.

Express Yourself with Voice Moods

With the new voice moods feature, users can now add a touch of personality to their audio messages by attaching an emoji, or what Google refers to as a “mood”. This creative touch allows the recipient to sense the emotion behind the message through a quick visual cue, complemented by an animated emoji, before they even hit play. The feature is not only a fun way to communicate but also adds clarity to the tone of voice messages.

Currently, there are nine distinct voice moods to choose from, each paired with an appropriate emoji. This feature is accessible in the latest beta release of Google Messages, version “20240501_RC00”. It is anticipated that the voice moods will soon transition from the beta environment to the stable build, making them available to a broader audience.

A Fresh Look for Audio Recording

Alongside voice moods, the beta version of Google Messages has been graced with a revamped audio recorder interface. The update moves away from the previous “long-press and slide to cancel” mechanism, adopting a design inspired by the Material You aesthetic. The new interface features a straightforward “Tap to record your voice” prompt, complemented by intuitive icons for the microphone, cancel, and attach functions. Additionally, a novel “Noise Cancellation” button has been introduced to help users filter out unwanted background noise from their recordings.

The overarching goal of these updates is to refine the audio messaging experience within RCS chats, offering users a more intuitive way to communicate. Google is poised to continue this momentum, with more features slated to be unveiled for Google Messages in the near future. Users are encouraged to keep an eye out for these updates as they roll out.
