Enhanced Sharing Capabilities in the Google App for Android
In a move to streamline the sharing of information, the Google app on Android devices has introduced a convenient new feature. Users can now share links directly from search results with a simple tap, bypassing the need to open the link first. This update eliminates the previous requirement of navigating to the webpage to copy its URL, offering a more efficient way to distribute content.
The discovery of this feature was credited to Artem Russakovskii, the founder of Android Police, who observed the change on the platform formerly known as Twitter. The ‘Share’ button is now visible above the ‘About this result’ section, accessible through the three-dot menu adjacent to individual search results.
Upon selecting the ‘Share’ button, users are greeted with the familiar Android system share sheet. This interface provides options to copy the link, send it to a contact, or share it through various apps. This enhancement addresses the limitation within the Google app, which previously did not support long-pressing a link to access its URL, unlike traditional web browsers.
However, it’s important to note that the ‘Share’ button may not be available for all types of search results. For instance, links that lead to app downloads on the Google Play Store do not present the option to copy.
While desktop users have long enjoyed the ability to right-click to copy and share links, the Google app now offers a similar level of convenience on mobile devices. Clicking the three-dot menu not only provides details about the website but also allows users to share the link, save it for later, or provide feedback on the search result to Google.
Last year, the Google app received several updates, including the addition of a ‘Notes’ feature, which allows users to annotate and read notes on search results. Another significant update was the introduction of Search with Generative AI (SGE), which leverages AI to generate concise summaries of search results.
