In a significant shift, Microsoft has announced that users of Windows 10 will no longer receive new features for Microsoft 365 applications starting in August 2026. This decision marks a pivotal moment for the tech giant, as it aims to encourage users to transition to Windows 11 for the latest enhancements.
According to reports, the phased discontinuation of new feature support will affect various user groups. Microsoft 365 Personal and Family users, along with Current Channel users in the business sector, will see their feature updates cease in August 2026. Following this, the enterprise segment will experience similar cutoffs, with monthly channel users on Windows 10 losing access to new features by October 13, 2026, and semi-annual channel users by January 12, 2027.
Earlier this year, Microsoft made headlines with a U-turn regarding security updates for Office apps on Windows 10, but the company did not disclose the impending feature limitations at that time. As it stands, while security updates will continue for Office applications on Windows 10 until October 10, 2028, the absence of new features will necessitate an upgrade to Windows 11 for users seeking the latest capabilities.
Despite Microsoft’s efforts to promote Windows 11, millions of devices still operate on Windows 10, even as Windows 11 has recently surpassed it as the most utilized desktop operating system. For those who wish to extend their security updates, Microsoft offers a complimentary option for an additional year, provided users enable Windows Backup.
