Game over: Chrome OS pulls the plug on Steam gaming

Steam Support on Chrome OS Beta Coming to an End

Steam support on Chrome OS has been a long time coming, starting as a beta test in early 2022. Graduating to a beta later that year, progress has unfortunately slowed down. Now, users are being informed that the beta is slated to end as 2026 gets started.

Choosing a Chromebook over a standard PC laptop can make sense for a lot of good reasons, from security to affordability. However, one area where Chrome OS has lacked is gaming. The hope for better gaming on Chrome OS was tied to support for Steam and its vast library of games.

Steam support on Chrome OS has been experimental, requiring a powerful Chromebook and some technical know-how to set up. Despite the initial excitement, recent news from Valve indicates that Steam support on Chrome OS is coming to an end.

Users attempting to install the Steam beta on a Chromebook are now being notified that the beta will be winding down at the end of the year. Unfortunately, this means that playing Steam games on a Chromebook will no longer be possible once 2026 arrives.

While this may be disappointing news for Chrome gaming enthusiasts, there are still other options available. Chromebook owners can explore Android games, retro game emulators, or cloud gaming services like Amazon Luna, NVIDIA GeForce Now, or Xbox Cloud Gaming.
