Meta is Sunsetting its Messenger Apps for Windows and Mac

Meta’s Messenger Apps Face Sunset on Desktop Platforms

In a significant shift for its desktop offerings, Meta is set to discontinue its Messenger applications for both Windows and macOS. A support page recently uncovered by Apple Insider reveals that users will receive in-app notifications as the deprecation process unfolds.

According to the details shared on the support page for the Mac version, users will have a grace period of 60 days to utilize the Messenger app before it becomes fully obsolete. After this period, access to the Mac Messenger app will be restricted, prompting the company to recommend users delete the app entirely, as it will no longer serve any purpose.

While the Facebook Messenger app remains accessible for download from the Microsoft Store at this time, the Mac version has already been removed from the Mac App Store. Additionally, a standalone Facebook app is still available on the Microsoft Store, though it appears to function primarily as a web wrapper.

This decision follows Meta’s previous move last year, when the company transitioned its native Messenger desktop applications to progressive web apps. As a result, Windows and Mac users are unlikely to experience significant disruption. For those with a Facebook account, Messenger continues to be available through Facebook.com, while users without an account can still access the service via messenger.com.
