Performance Challenges on Steam Deck
Upon the release of Death Stranding 2 for PC last month, expectations were high, particularly among those eager to experience the game on the Steam Deck. However, the reality proved to be less than favorable. As I launched the game on my OLED device, I was met with a series of performance issues that left much to be desired.
Despite my attempts to adjust various settings, the framerate stubbornly fluctuated between the teens and mid-20s, accompanied by frustratingly long hitches. This experience stood in stark contrast to my previous enjoyment of Death Stranding: Director’s Cut, which had run smoothly and showcased the potential of the Steam Deck as a capable gaming platform.
While the disappointment was palpable, it is essential to consider the context. Death Stranding 2 is a significant blockbuster title, originally designed as a PS5 exclusive. Given the aging hardware of the Steam Deck, it is perhaps understandable that the game struggles to deliver the same level of performance.
In the end, while the Steam Deck has proven itself with other titles, this latest release serves as a reminder of the challenges that come with adapting high-profile games to a portable format.
