Microsoft is undergoing a notable transformation in its approach to artificial intelligence within Windows 11. Following a period of enthusiastic AI feature integration, the tech giant is now strategically stepping back, gradually phasing out Copilot from various applications. This shift appears aimed at diminishing the overall presence of AI in the operating system, with initial changes already observable across several programs where icons are vanishing or functionalities are being refined.
Notepad Gets New Look Without Copilot Logo
As reported by the online magazine “WindowsLatest,” one of the applications affected by these changes is the text editor Notepad. In the latest version, 11.2512.28.0, the recognizable Copilot icon has been replaced with a more traditional pencil icon. Despite this visual alteration, the underlying functions remain unchanged, allowing users to continue writing, rephrasing, or summarizing texts seamlessly. The technical capabilities persist, as the AI features in Notepad can still be disabled at the user’s discretion.
Snipping Tool Loses AI Function Completely
In contrast, the adjustments to the Snipping Tool are more pronounced. Microsoft has opted to completely eliminate the Copilot integration from this application. Previously, users could access an AI button after selecting an image area, enabling visual searches akin to Google Lens. This functionality has now been entirely removed, along with any references to AI features within the tool, marking a complete departure of artificial intelligence from this particular application.
The rationale behind these adjustments is not unexpected. Microsoft had previously signaled its intention to streamline the number of Copilot access points. In a blog post directed at Windows Insiders, Windows chief Pavan Davuluri outlined plans to eliminate unnecessary entry points back in March 2026, mentioning applications such as Notepad, Photos, Widgets, and the Snipping Tool. The recent changes reflect the execution of this strategy.
AI Remains Part of Windows 11
However, a complete departure from AI is not on the horizon. Instead, Microsoft aims to integrate Copilot more subtly within the system moving forward. While the functionalities will remain intact, they will be positioned more discreetly in the background. It remains to be seen whether Microsoft will introduce further enhancements to the operating system alongside this adjustment.
