For some time now, users have expressed frustration with how Windows 11’s Task Manager reports CPU usage statistics. The discourse has largely centered on the notion that the application relies solely on base clock speeds for its calculations. However, Dave Plummer, the original architect of Task Manager, recently shed light on a more nuanced issue in a video discussion. He suggested that the discrepancies may stem from average calculations and a series of “little lies” and “compromises” inherent in the underlying metrics.
Microsoft’s Response
In response to these ongoing concerns, Microsoft unveiled a fix in a recent Preview build of the operating system. The company stated, “We are changing the way Task Manager calculates CPU utilization for the Processes, Performance, and Users pages. Task Manager will now use standard metrics to display CPU workload consistently across all pages, aligning with industry standards and third-party tools.” This adjustment aims to enhance the reliability of the data presented to users.
Plummer also proposed an intriguing solution for power users: a distinct Windows mode that would eliminate certain restrictions, thereby offering a more flexible experience tailored to advanced users. This could potentially help retain Windows users amidst a noticeable shift toward Linux among a significant minority of the user base.
While there remains a degree of skepticism regarding Microsoft’s commitment to improving Windows 11, the recent developments suggest a willingness to address user concerns. As the tech landscape evolves, it will be interesting to see how these changes resonate with the community.
