Google’s Safety app just picked up a few new tricks for your kids

Google has unveiled a series of enhancements in its latest Android Drop, which promises to enrich the user experience across various devices. Among these updates, a notable development is the expansion of the Personal Safety app, now accessible to children under the age of 13. This initiative aims to provide parents with greater peace of mind regarding their children’s safety.

New Features for Young Users

The Personal Safety app, previously tailored for adults, will now allow tweens to showcase essential information directly on their phone’s lock screen. This includes:

  • Emergency contacts specifically designated for parents.
  • The child’s age.
  • A list of any allergies they may have.

This feature is designed to ensure that crucial information is readily available in emergency situations, enhancing the safety of young users.

In addition to these features, children will also have the ability to activate Crash Detection on their devices. This functionality is particularly significant as it automatically contacts emergency services and designated priority contacts in the event of an accident, further bolstering safety measures for young users.

While the specifics regarding parental management of these settings through Family Link remain unclear, Google has indicated that teens will benefit from features such as Safety Check. This feature allows users to schedule reminders to confirm their safety or notify emergency contacts if they fail to check in. Real-time location sharing is also included, providing an added layer of security.

The enhancements are set to roll out across all Android devices operating on Android 12 or later, which is the minimum requirement for the Personal Safety app. Although Google has announced that these features are “coming soon,” it has not provided a definitive timeline for their availability. It is worth noting that some devices may refer to the app simply as “Safety,” while Samsung integrates similar functionalities, including real-time check-ins and automatic emergency calling, within its Safety and emergency menu in One UI Settings.
