Microsoft confirms Windows 11 26H2, urges IT admins to prepare for release

In a notable shift from its usual annual update cycle, Microsoft has introduced a “26H1” version of Windows 11 earlier this year, designated as a “scoped” build exclusively for select new silicon PCs. This version is not accessible to users operating on the 24H2 and 25H2 builds, as the company is concurrently preparing for the release of version 26H2, a detail that has been officially confirmed.

Anticipating the 26H2 Release

In a recent post on the Windows IT Pro blog, Microsoft has called upon IT administrators to gear up for the imminent arrival of Windows 11 version 26H2. This forthcoming update will be delivered as a small enablement package (eKB), designed to activate certain features that are already embedded within the operating system’s code. This approach promises a more streamlined and efficient update experience, minimizing disruptions by simply toggling a few flags rather than necessitating a complete overhaul.

The seamless integration of this update is made possible by the shared servicing branch of standard Windows 11 releases, which utilize the same source code. However, it is important to note that users of Windows 11 26H1 will not have the option to upgrade to 26H2, as these versions operate on different branches—a fact that has been understood for some time now.

In line with previous annual feature updates, Windows 11 26H2 will adhere to the following support cycles:

  • 24 months of support for Home, Pro, Pro EDU, and Pro for Workstations editions
  • 36 months of support for Enterprise, Education, IoT Enterprise, and Enterprise Multi-session editions

While Microsoft has yet to announce a specific release date for Windows 11 26H2, the company has indicated that it is “coming soon.” Based on the current release pattern, a rollout could potentially commence in early October 2026.

In preparation for this update, IT administrators are encouraged to start validating Windows Insider releases within the Experimental Channel, devise rollout strategies, and optimize the use of their existing deployment tools.
