Microsoft is now force-upgrading all Windows 11 home PCs to 25H2

Microsoft has embarked on a significant transition for users of Windows 11, mandating the upgrade to version 25H2 for all Home and Pro PCs that are not overseen by IT departments. Previously, this upgrade was optional, allowing users to decide when to make the leap from older versions. Now, however, even systems running the outdated 23H2 will be ushered into the fold of 25H2.

Details of the Upgrade

As reported by Windows Latest, the rollout is designed to be seamless, utilizing machine learning to ensure a smooth transition. The company has confirmed that:

Devices running Home and Pro editions of Windows 11 that are not managed by IT departments will receive the update to Windows 11, version 25H2 through the machine learning-based intelligent rollout.

This mandatory upgrade signifies that all home user PCs will receive the latest version, regardless of user preference. The impetus behind this move appears to be the forthcoming release of Windows 11 26H2, which is set to arrive later this year. Notably, both 25H2 and 26H2 share a common codebase, making the transition to the latter a straightforward process that requires merely a small download of an enablement package.

The upgrade to 25H2 is expected to be quick, taking only a few minutes and necessitating just a single restart. This update not only modernizes the operating system but also extends the support period for users by an additional 12 months, ensuring that their systems continue to receive vital updates.

For those who find that the upgrade to 25H2 has not yet appeared on their devices, it is possible to manually initiate the process. Users can navigate to Windows Settings, select Windows Update, and click on “Check for updates” to prompt the installation.
