Microsoft is moving another Outlook feature behind a Copilot paywall

In a notable shift, Microsoft has announced that it will be placing another feature behind a paywall, specifically targeting its Outlook users. The Meeting Insight feature, which has been a staple for many, is set to be retired by early September 2026. Following this date, users will no longer have access to meeting insights within event details, nor will they see relevant files and emails that were previously highlighted by this feature.

Transition to New Features

In its place, Microsoft is introducing the “Prepare for this meeting” experience. This new feature aims to streamline the preparation process by summarizing pertinent content for upcoming meetings, including tasks and documents that participants may need to review.

Previously, the Meeting Insight feature did not require a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, making it accessible to a broader range of users. However, Microsoft has been gradually shifting its strategy, as evidenced by its recent updates communicated through the Microsoft 365 Message Center. This change follows earlier announcements where Microsoft canceled plans to roll out several Copilot-branded AI features for Windows 11.

As part of its evolving approach, Microsoft has begun requiring a Microsoft 365 Copilot license for utilizing Copilot Chat across various applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. This transition indicates a broader trend where functionalities that were once complimentary are now transitioning to a paid model.

Microsoft’s Copilot initiative has seen a rapid expansion, with nearly 80 distinct products currently branded under this umbrella. The company has experimented with various applications of Copilot, including concepts like a Copilot OS, although the fate of such projects remains uncertain.

As Microsoft continues to refine its offerings, users may anticipate further features being placed behind paywalls, while free alternatives could be diminished or altered. This strategic pivot reflects a growing trend within the tech industry, where companies seek to monetize their innovations more aggressively.
