Microsoft’s Data Center Plans in Slough
Microsoft is poised to advance its ambitions for a data center in Slough, England, with plans potentially being submitted as early as this autumn, as reported by The Slough Express. This initiative follows a recent consultation aimed at gathering feedback from local residents, during which Microsoft emphasized the essential role of data centers in modern life. The company stated, “Data centres have become integral to our lives, with social media, contactless payments and remote working all reliant on the functionality they provide.”
However, the proposal has not been without its challenges. A petition opposing the construction has garnered significant support, reflecting a growing concern among residents. Earlier this week, hundreds of protesters gathered at the proposed site, as noted by The Yorkshire Evening Post. Their grievances echo those raised by communities in Leeds, where Microsoft has also faced scrutiny regarding its data center project.
Residents in both Slough and Leeds have voiced apprehensions about the environmental implications of such facilities. Concerns have been raised about potential noise pollution and other adverse effects that the data centers could impose on their respective neighborhoods.
Despite the pushback, Microsoft has already secured approval from the Leeds City Council, which voted unanimously in favor of the project. The ultimate decision regarding the Slough data center, however, rests with Chief Planning Officer Martin Elliot, who will weigh the community’s feedback against the company’s plans.
