Microsoft Releases July 2024 Patch Tuesday Updates
Microsoft has recently rolled out the July 2024 Patch Tuesday updates for various versions of Windows, including Windows 10 and Windows 11. These updates, which include security fixes, are essential for ensuring the smooth operation of the operating system.
However, alongside the security patches, Microsoft has also identified a BitLocker-related bug that is affecting several versions of Windows. Users may encounter a BitLocker recovery screen when booting up their devices after installing the Patch Tuesday update.
On the Windows health dashboard, Microsoft has provided detailed information about the issue:
After installing the July 2024 Windows security update, some users may see a BitLocker recovery screen upon booting their device. This issue is more likely to occur if the Device Encryption option is enabled in Settings. Users may need to enter the recovery key from their Microsoft account to unlock their drive.
Affected platforms:
- Client: Windows 11 version 23H2, Windows 11 version 22H2, Windows 11 version 21H2, Windows 10 version 22H2, Windows 10 version 21H2.
- Server: Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2019, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2012 R2, Windows Server 2012, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008.
Microsoft has also provided a workaround for users facing this issue, which involves entering the BitLocker recovery key:
Workaround: Users can retrieve the recovery key by logging into the BitLocker recovery screen portal with their Microsoft account. Once the recovery key is entered, the device should start up normally from the BitLocker recovery screen.
Next steps: Microsoft is actively investigating the issue and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
