In a delightful twist on his usual roles, Jason Momoa takes on the character of Garrett “The Garbageman” Garrison in the upcoming live-action film “A Minecraft Movie.” This film, inspired by the immensely popular Minecraft video game, also features the comedic talents of Jack Black and Jennifer Coolidge. During a recent discussion with director Jared Hess and producer Torfi Frans Ólafsson, the dynamic of the all-star cast was a focal point.
Behind the Scenes with the Stars
When asked about Momoa’s comedic abilities, Hess responded with enthusiasm, revealing, “Yes, when you meet Jason, beneath that ocean of muscle that is him, he’s just a big dork! And, so we really wanted to capture that side of him.” This playful portrayal sees Momoa donning a pink leather jacket and a humorous ringer tee, complete with a proudly displayed “Gamer of the Year, 1989” badge, marking a departure from his typically brooding characters.
Hess elaborated on the film’s premise, stating, “You just see him kick butt in so many movies, and he’s larger than life. And it was like, ‘Man, it would be so great to see him get the crap beaten out of him in Minecraft.'” In this whimsical adventure, Momoa’s character and his crew find themselves in the Minecraft “Overworld,” guided by Black’s eccentric survival expert, Steve.
The chemistry between Momoa and Black is palpable, with Hess sharing insights into their initial interactions. “Before we started the movie, they definitely had like, secret crushes on each other,” he noted, playfully mimicking their mutual admiration. Momoa himself expressed a hint of nervousness about working with Black, to which Hess reassured him, “Dude, you guys are going to love each other.” Their on-screen rapport is expected to resonate with audiences.
Jennifer Coolidge’s Comedic Brilliance
Adding to the film’s charm, Jennifer Coolidge brings her unique flair to the project. In a memorable scene, her character accidentally hits a Minecraft villager with her car, leading to an unexpected romantic twist. Hess praised Coolidge’s comedic prowess, stating, “Jennifer Coolidge can be dropped into anything, and it’s comedy gold. She can do no wrong. She’s an absolute goddess, like she’s just so funny.”
Ólafsson shared a humorous anecdote from the set, revealing, “There was a major problem on set because the cast and crew, who are usually professionals, could not stop laughing. Especially when Jared let Coolidge loose, and she started improvising. It was so hilarious!” He added with a chuckle, “Unfortunately, not all of it was PG rated, so we had to cut it, but it was good stuff.”
With its blend of humor and adventure, “A Minecraft Movie” promises to be a delightful experience for audiences, showcasing the talents of its star-studded cast. The film is currently playing in theaters, inviting fans to join in on the fun.
