A new expansion and the ability to be a crow wizard has me enjoying a 10-year-old action RPG for the first time

Exploring the Timeless Appeal of Grim Dawn

As I embark on my inaugural journey through Grim Dawn, the accolades that have surrounded this title for the past decade become increasingly clear. While the game may carry the weight of age, it remains a remarkably polished action RPG that has deftly avoided the pitfalls of obsolescence.

The developers at Crate Entertainment have ensured that Grim Dawn feels contemporary, even as it celebrates its ten-year milestone. The recent expansion, Fangs of Asterkarn, introduces a host of quality-of-life improvements that breathe new life into the experience. Visually, the game holds its own, evoking a nostalgic charm reminiscent of older World of Warcraft zones.

Having recently dipped my toes into Path of Exile 2, I approached Grim Dawn with a hint of trepidation, fearing it might feel outdated. However, the addition of full WASD movement support in Fangs of Asterkarn has alleviated those concerns. This control scheme, which I find indispensable in action RPGs, integrates seamlessly into the gameplay, making it hard to believe it wasn’t part of the original design.

My choice of class, the occultist, offered an unexpected glimpse into the game’s roots. I envisioned a spell-casting warlock experience, yet I found myself channeling my inner marksman, unleashing a barrage of rifle fire upon my foes rather than casting curses. While I anticipate unlocking more spells as I progress, the initial experience of being a “bulletmancer” was not quite what I had in mind.

Fangs of Asterkarn also introduces a new class: the berserker. Initially, I assumed this would be a take on the shapeshifting druid archetype, which I typically shy away from. However, upon discovering the skill tree node that allows transformation into a werewolf, I found myself intrigued and perhaps even willing to embrace this new role.

In contrast to titles like Diablo 4, which can sometimes foster a sense of urgency regarding efficiency and seasonal content, Grim Dawn offers a more relaxed approach. If this marks the conclusion of Grim Dawn’s active development—though ongoing patches are likely—the game stands as a commendable finale. Many games falter, leaving new players grappling with a steep learning curve, but Crate Entertainment has meticulously refined the experience over the years, ensuring it remains accessible and engaging.

Looking ahead, the future seems bright for Grim Dawn. According to founder Arthur Bruno, the development of Grim Dawn 2 is already underway, promising to deliver even more captivating adventures. For now, Fangs of Asterkarn is available on Steam, inviting both newcomers and veterans to explore its rich world.
