A PvE-only mode is coming to Marathon as Bungie lays out plans for seasons 3, 4 and 5

Marathon director Joe Ziegler has recently shared insights into Bungie’s plans for the upcoming seasons of Marathon, emphasizing the studio’s commitment to evolving the game experience. While some may be preoccupied with concerns regarding the game’s performance on Steam or the implications of Sony’s recent writedown of Bungie’s value, Ziegler’s message focuses on the game’s development and forthcoming features.

Innovative Gameplay Directions

Among the exciting updates is the introduction of a new map that promises to incorporate “alien elements and mind-warping debuffs,” although players will need to wait a bit longer for its release. The next Runner shell, named Sentinel, will offer a defensive kit, adding another layer of strategy to gameplay.

Perhaps the most intriguing announcements center around two new PvE-focused modes set to debut in the next season. Ziegler articulated a vision for Marathon that caters to players seeking varied experiences, stating, “We want to evolve Marathon as a whole to be an experience where you can find more novel ways to play when you’re stressed out from a nail-biting run and just need to cool off or have fun without the stress.” This duality allows players to engage in intense competition or relax and enjoy a more laid-back gaming session.

  • In Season 2, we will be experimenting with two modes, one at the beginning of the season and one towards the middle/latter half of the season. The experimental mode at the beginning of the season will focus more on PvE, but with a light touch of PvP. The second experimental mode will be a PvE-only mode that’s focused on crews being tasked with completing objectives together and making some progress across matches.

This development is likely to resonate with fans of Destiny, particularly those who favor PvE gameplay. Given that Marathon has primarily been associated with high-stakes competition, the introduction of PvE options could provide a refreshing alternative for players looking to collaborate rather than compete.

However, Ziegler reassured fans that PvP remains a cornerstone of Marathon’s identity. He noted, “We’ll continue to run experimental queues beyond these two offerings for Season 2 and beyond, testing the waters around other mechanics (such as perhaps a more purely PvP-focused mode) with the potential for these to become part of the core game loop or permanent new ways to play.”

While there may be skepticism regarding the adaptation of existing maps to a PvE format, especially given the limited variety of UESC enemies, the potential for meaningful co-op gameplay remains. The challenge lies in ensuring that such modes are well-designed, a task Bungie is well-equipped to tackle.
