A week after launch, my new favorite gungy, Condemned-style horror-brawler has its first patch and the promise of yokai-punching spiked knuckles on the way

In an unexpected turn of events, Labyrinth of the Demon King has emerged as a strong contender for game of the year, standing shoulder to shoulder with heavyweights like Avowed and Oblivion Remastered. This survival horror dungeon crawler captivated players, including myself, during a recent five-hour flight where I found myself immersed in its dark and intricate world. The game’s small but dedicated development team has already announced plans for enhancements just a week post-launch, which speaks volumes about their commitment to player experience.

Upcoming Updates and Features

The first update promises a series of tweaks and bug fixes that aim to refine gameplay:

  • Added framerate cap options, accompanied by a warning popup indicating that some behaviors may be unpredictable at very high frame rates.
  • Disabled the torch from being unequipped when entering an exterior cell.
  • The quick equip torch button will now also equip the lantern if the player has made that purchase.
  • Corrected an error where placeholder language names were displayed instead of the official translated terms.
  • Fixed a spelling error in the Kings Court Puzzle.
  • Resolved an issue where status effects displayed “{Amount}” instead of the correct stack amounts in certain languages.

While these updates are certainly beneficial, the real excitement lies in what’s on the horizon. A new spiked knuckle weapon is set to be introduced, which promises to enhance the gritty, first-person melee combat that defines the game. This addition, along with a cursed blood katana forged from the broken blade players start with, is sure to elevate the gameplay experience even further.

PCG Australia editor Shaun Prescott has already lauded Labyrinth of the Demon King as “the most potent weird horror we’re likely to see in 2025,” awarding it an impressive 81% in his review. For those intrigued, the game is currently available at a launch discount of , down from its regular price of , until May 27 on Steam.
