Android Auto rolls out game support, no longer in beta

More on Android Auto:

Google has officially announced the graduation of game support on Android Auto from a limited beta to broad availability. This move allows developers to bring games to your car’s display, adding a bit of interactive fun to your driving experience.

Games on Android Auto and Android Automotive have been available since last year, offering a way to entertain yourself during downtime in the car. While the games do not directly integrate with the car’s controls, they provide a fun distraction for moments when you’re waiting or stationary.

Currently, there are around 30 games available on Android Auto, but this number is expected to grow in the near future. Google’s decision to open up game support to all developers means that more games will be accessible to users without requiring specific approval from Google.

According to Google, bringing games to cars allows developers to reach users during natural downtime, such as waiting at a charging station or for a curbside order pickup. Developers can now publish games to the open testing and production tracks on Google Play, following key technical requirements and publishing criteria.

Games on Android Auto must declare support for both Android Auto and Android Automotive OS separately. They should be able to adapt to different display sizes and recognize when a vehicle is parked to ensure safe gameplay. Additionally, games can support controllers on both Android Auto and Android Automotive.

For developers interested in bringing their games to Android Auto, Google provides full documentation on the necessary steps to follow. This milestone in game support on Android Auto opens up new opportunities for developers to engage with users in their vehicles.
