Publisher and developer Arc System Works, alongside APLUS Games, has unveiled the PC version of the rhythm puzzle game Magical Beat on Steam, priced at .99 or 990 yen. This release marks a significant milestone for the game, which initially captivated audiences in Japanese arcades on May 31, 2012, before making its way to the PS Vita on December 12, 2023, and the PlayStation 3 on August 5, 2014. The PS Vita version was later introduced to Western players on June 17, 2014.
According to the Steam page, Magical Beat offers a refreshing twist on the puzzle genre by infusing rhythm into gameplay. Players are tasked with dropping colored blocks in a match-3 style, synchronizing their actions with the background music’s beat. This engaging mechanic allows players to send blocks to their opponent’s screen, creating a dynamic competitive environment. The game features charming 8-bit characters and menus that guide players through various stages, each presenting unique BPMs and challenges.
One of the standout elements of Magical Beat is its original Vocaloid soundtrack, crafted by the renowned Nico Nico celebrity and sound creator Kikuo. Additionally, players can enjoy popular tracks from various Arc System Works titles, including music from the acclaimed Guilty Gear and BlazBlue series.
Puzzle Dropper Meets Rhythm!
In Magical Beat, players drop colored blocks, referred to as beatons, in sync with the soundtrack’s beats. By connecting three or more beatons of the same color, players can eliminate them and send greyed-out beatons to disrupt their opponents, based on the score achieved from their eliminations. The challenge lies in clearing the beatons on one’s side before they stack up, potentially sending opponents into a chaotic “beaton hell.” However, if players miss the beat while dropping a beaton, the block disintegrates into pieces, complicating their strategy.
CHAIN Time!
Interestingly, beatons do not vanish immediately upon connecting three or more of the same color; they remain on the field for a brief period. This mechanic encourages players to connect additional beatons of the same color, allowing for larger clearances and strategic plays.
Popular Soundtracks From New Series Including Guilty Gear: Strive and More!
With over 100 soundtracks available, Magical Beat boasts an impressive collection that includes fan-favorite tracks from Guilty Gear: Strive, Guilty Gear: Xrd, the BlazBlue series, and the River City series, among others from the Arc System Works catalog.
