London-based Bossa Games has recently announced a reduction in its workforce, a decision that reflects the studio’s strategic pivot as it prepares for the launch of its highly anticipated title, Lost Skies. In a candid message shared on LinkedIn, co-CEO and co-founder Henrique Olifiers addressed the difficult choice to downsize, emphasizing the necessity of focusing on the late-stage production of the game.
Strategic Restructuring
Olifiers articulated the studio’s vision for the future, revealing plans to reorganize Bossa into smaller, agile teams post-launch. This restructuring aims to foster innovation and expedite the development of new titles. “We’ve had to make the painful decision to scale back, focusing on the late-stage production of Lost Skies and its upcoming launch,” he stated. “Our goal is to ensure the game is successfully released and evolves for its players in the foreseeable future.”
The co-CEO expressed deep regret over the impact of these layoffs, acknowledging the immense talent and dedication of the affected employees. “This means saying very difficult goodbyes to extremely talented and treasured colleagues, truly some of the best people in the games industry, who have been part of our journey for a long time,” Olifiers shared. “We wish we had found a way of navigating this turmoil without resorting to the decision of scaling back our teams, but unfortunately, we’ve failed this endeavor.”
Earlier this year, Bossa Games had already laid off a significant portion of its workforce, with approximately a third of its staff affected in early 2024. As the studio moves forward, it remains committed to its vision of delivering engaging gaming experiences while navigating the challenges of the industry landscape.
