Building blocks of history: Flint Castle gets Minecraft makeover

Innovative Learning at Flint Castle

On a remarkable Friday, school children ventured into the historic realm of Flint Castle, not just through its ancient stone walls but also via the digital landscape of Minecraft Education. This event marks the launch of Cadw’s fourth Welsh heritage site within the popular gaming platform, seamlessly blending history with modern technology.

Pupils from Ysgol Flint Gwynedd and Ysgol Cornist Park, including the Young Custodians for Flint Castle, gathered at the 13th-century fortress. Here, they engaged with the castle’s rich and tumultuous 750-year history through interactive learning experiences that brought the past to life.

The introduction of Flint Castle into the Minecraft universe is part of Cadw’s innovative initiative that combines Welsh heritage with education and digital skills. Since the project first launched at Conwy Castle in December 2024, it has seen over 7,000 downloads of its bilingual resources by educators across Wales, highlighting its growing impact in classrooms.

Flint Castle holds a significant place in British history, being the first fortress constructed by King Edward I during his conquest of Wales in 1277. It has been the backdrop for pivotal events, including the capture of King Richard II in 1399, a moment immortalized in Shakespeare’s play, and the key role it played in Owain Glyndŵr’s rebellion in 1400.

Through the Minecraft experience, learners aged 8 to 14 can embark on a virtual tour of the castle’s walls and towers, follow the newly introduced “Conflict Trail” that chronicles centuries of power struggles between Wales and England, and even create their own historical films in specially designed Machinima zones.

Minister for Culture, Jack Sargeant, attended the launch at Flint Castle to witness the gameplay firsthand. He remarked,

“Flint Castle’s story of conquest, rebellion and resilience is perfect for young people to question and explore. In Minecraft, learners don’t just study history, they’re able to step inside and start their own story. This innovative project shows how we can inspire the next generation to engage with Welsh history and heritage in new and exciting ways. By bringing Flint Castle into the classroom through Minecraft, we’re helping young people connect with their past whilst developing crucial digital skills for their future.”

Looking ahead, the initiative aims to incorporate approximately 20 Cadw-managed heritage locations into the Minecraft world over the next year, with Plas Mawr in Conwy and Blaenavon in Torfaen set to follow. The Flint Castle Minecraft Education world is fully aligned with the Curriculum for Wales and is available in both Welsh and English, with the Welsh version being the first fully immersive Welsh-language Minecraft resource.
