Death Stranding 2’s PC port pushed it past 2 million copies sold

In a noteworthy development for the gaming industry, Alinea Analytics, as reported by Eurogamer, has revealed that Death Stranding 2: On the Beach achieved impressive sales figures, moving 425,000 copies within its first week on PC. This figure, when combined with the 1.6 million units sold on PlayStation 5, brings the total sales of Death Stranding 2 to over two million copies since its release.

Sales Insights and Market Trends

While these numbers are commendable, they pale in comparison to the original Death Stranding, which boasted a player base of 20 million, according to director Hideo Kojima. It’s worth noting that Death Stranding 2 launched exclusively on PlayStation less than a year ago, making its swift transition to PC particularly significant. Alinea Analytics highlighted that the nine-month gap between the game’s launch and its PC port marks it as the fastest exclusive to make this leap, surpassing the 14-month wait for Stellar Blade.

In light of these developments, Sony appears to be recalibrating its strategy regarding PC releases. Reports suggest that while live-service games will continue to transition to PC, single-player prestige titles—such as Ghosts of Yotei and the upcoming Wolverine game from Insomniac—are expected to remain exclusive to the PlayStation 5 platform.

Critics have noted that Death Stranding 2 delves deeply into themes of grief and loss, with its narrative framed as a journey of recovery for the protagonist, Sam. Each song in the game serves as a poignant track on Sam’s emotional mixtape, culminating in a narrative that ultimately finds hope and purpose in a reconnected world.
