Dolphin Emulator Expands NetPlay Support to Android

Dolphin Emulator, a popular retro game emulator for various platforms, has announced a significant update that brings NetPlay support to Android devices. This update allows users to play online multiplayer with GameCube and Wii titles, extending the NetPlay feature to cross-platform instances.

Traditionally, NetPlay required specific mechanisms to sync gameplay across devices, limiting it to scenarios where all players are on the same operating system and desktop environments. However, Dolphin’s latest progress report reveals the steps taken to enable NetPlay on Android and open it up for cross-platform play.

The update relies on a method called lockstep, where emulators on different devices run in parallel, recording user input to stay in sync. Dolphin’s solution involves running the application on a single CPU core to ensure gameplay consistency. Recent advancements in Android flagship devices make it possible to implement similar features on mobile platforms.

While there are still limitations, such as the need for a stable network connection, the team is working on collaborative play through Wi-Fi Direct to emulate local Wi-Fi gameplay on the Nintendo DS. The addition of cross-platform play increases the risk of desync due to different processor architectures and graphics drivers.

The Dolphin team is addressing security concerns by moving to GitHub’s vulnerability reporting mechanism and advising users to avoid opening untrusted ROM files or engaging in NetPlay with unknown users to prevent potential security risks.
