Epic Games To Create Fortnite, Minecraft, Roblox Metaverse

Epic Games is setting its sights on a bold vision for the future of gaming, aiming to weave together popular titles like Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox into a cohesive, interoperable metaverse. In a recent interview with The Verge, CEO Tim Sweeney elaborated on the company’s plans, positioning the upcoming Unreal 6 gaming engine as the cornerstone for this ambitious initiative.

The Unreal Engine: A Foundation for Innovation

The Unreal engine, renowned for its robust capabilities, has become a staple in the gaming industry, powering major franchises such as Fortnite and Mass Effect. Sweeney emphasized that the goal is to create a game-agnostic digital assets marketplace, allowing players to seamlessly interact with their favorite games and the digital items they cherish.

“The whole thesis here is that players are gravitating towards games which they can play together with all their friends,” Sweeney noted. He highlighted a growing trend where players are increasingly willing to invest in digital items within games they trust will endure over time. This sentiment is echoed in the success of titles like Grand Theft Auto Online, which has demonstrated how in-game purchases can translate into substantial profits for developers.

Building Trust Through Interoperability

However, Sweeney cautioned that the gaming ecosystem must evolve into a true metaverse to fully realize this vision. He posed a thought-provoking question: “If you’re just dabbling in a game, why would you spend money to buy an item that you’re never going to use again?” By fostering an interoperable economy, Epic Games aims to enhance player trust, ensuring that investments in digital goods yield lasting value across various platforms.

In 2022, Epic Games took significant steps toward this vision by raising billion to support its metaverse ambitions. Additionally, the company participated in Serie A’s funding round for metaverse infrastructure developer Hadean, contributing to a total of million raised.

A Vision for the Future

Saxs Persson, Epic Games’ executive vice president, also shared insights on the metaverse during the interview. He articulated a future where interoperability keeps gamers engaged, regardless of the platform they choose. “There’s no reason why we couldn’t have a federated way to flow between Roblox, Minecraft, and Fortnite. From our perspective, that would be amazing, because it keeps people together and lets the best ecosystem win,” Persson stated.

As Epic Games continues to forge ahead with its metaverse vision, the gaming community watches closely, eager to see how these developments will reshape the landscape of digital interaction and collaboration in gaming.
