Flappy Bird Makes a Comeback on Android Through Epic Games Store
More than a decade after its initial viral success and subsequent disappearance, Flappy Bird has returned to Android devices, thanks to the mobile Epic Games Store. The game’s re-release, exclusive to the Epic Games Store for Android, comes without any involvement in cryptocurrency, unlike its previous attempt through Telegram.
Flappy Bird Publishing, the entity behind the revival, has made it clear that the game on the Epic Games Store for Android will be monetized solely through ads and in-app purchases, offering cosmetic helmets for Flappy. The company emphasized that there will be no incorporation of Web3 elements in the game, contrary to earlier plans.
Initially, there were intentions to make the new version of Flappy Bird the world’s first open-source, community-owned Web 2 and Web 3 game. However, the current release steers away from that direction. Flappy Bird Publishing has also announced its commitment to introducing new content, such as worlds, characters, and themes, up until 2025.
It is worth noting that the original creator of Flappy Bird, Dong Nguyen, has distanced himself from the game’s revival and does not seem to be benefiting financially from it. The Flappy Bird Foundation, responsible for bringing back the game, acquired the abandoned trademark without involvement from Nguyen.
