Minecraft Developer Mojang Releases Native PS5 Version in Preview Form
Minecraft developer Mojang has officially released a native PlayStation 5 version of the game in preview form. This move brings the PS5 version in-line with the Xbox Series X and S versions, offering players a more enhanced gaming experience.
The new PS5 version of Minecraft includes native 4K resolution support, as well as higher settings for render distances and anti-aliasing. These settings were already available in the Xbox Series X and S versions of the game. However, there is no word yet on the addition of ray tracing to either the Xbox Series X or PS5 versions, despite Microsoft teasing the technology years ago.
The first preview of the native PS5 version of Minecraft is now available for testing. Players who own the PlayStation 4 version of the game for their PS5 can try out this early version by navigating to Settings and then Preview within the game. It’s important to note that multiplayer is currently only possible between players on PlayStation 4 and 5, with the exception of playing on Realms, which allows for cross-play with players on other devices. Additionally, this preview version does not have access to the Minecraft Store.
In a blog post explaining the decision to release a native PS5 version, Mojang stated, “we’ll be able to make the game run more effectively on the PS5’s hardware.” This suggests that players can expect a smoother and more optimized gaming experience on the new console.
Minecraft is a record-breaking video game, having sold over 300 million copies since its early access release in 2009. Despite its immense success, Microsoft and Mojang have chosen not to release a sequel. Xbox boss Phil Spencer revealed last year that Minecraft boasts an impressive 120 million monthly players, solidifying its position as a gaming phenomenon.
