Updated System Requirements
Microsoft has recently revised the recommended system requirements for the Java version of Minecraft, now suggesting a minimum of 16 GB of RAM and an RTX 2060 or an equivalent GPU. This marks a substantial increase from last year’s recommendations, which suggested only 4 GB of RAM, and even 8 GB in some instances. The GPU requirements have also shifted, moving away from older 700-series Nvidia graphics cards to more modern options.
While Microsoft clarifies that these updates do not indicate a change in the game’s performance needs, they aim to align the requirements with the current state of the game. The company emphasizes, “Our goal is simple: we want to make it clear for players what kind of computer can run Java Edition smoothly. While older devices may still launch the game, they will struggle to deliver a good experience.” This could result in issues such as low frame rates, visual glitches, and prolonged loading times, which detract from the overall gaming experience.
This updated approach not only clarifies the hardware requirements for players but also enables Microsoft to enhance Minecraft further. By phasing out support for older hardware that struggles with the game, the company can focus on modernizing the game’s features and performance.
Despite these changes, Minecraft remains relatively accessible compared to many contemporary titles. With 16 GB of RAM becoming the new standard, even budget gaming rigs are expected to meet this requirement. The RTX 2060, while over six years old, still offers a solid foundation for gameplay. In contrast, newer games like Halo: Campaign Evolved demand significantly more advanced hardware, highlighting Minecraft’s enduring status as a lightweight option in the gaming landscape.
