Microsoft Sparks Outrage Among Gamers

Microsoft has recently faced backlash from gamers after deleting old Mojang Minecraft accounts. The reason behind the deletions was that many gamers failed to migrate their accounts from old Mojang accounts to Microsoft accounts.

Following Microsoft’s acquisition of Mojang and Minecraft, it was announced that legacy Minecraft and Minecraft: Java Edition owners would need to migrate their accounts to Microsoft accounts. The migration process began in October 2020 and was initially set to be completed by March 2022. However, Microsoft later extended the deadline to Sept. 19, 2023.

For those who did not migrate their accounts in time, Microsoft made it clear that they would no longer be able to sign in to Minecraft.net or the Minecraft launcher. Eventually, these accounts would be deleted, resulting in a loss of security and access to new features.

This move has left many gamers frustrated, with thousands taking to Reddit to express their outrage. One Redditor even went as far as stating they would resort to pirating every Minecraft game, including the upcoming Starfield expansion and Elder Scrolls VI.

The Redditor wrote, “The fact that they can simply revoke your license to the game is outrageous. This is why I will never support DRMs, as you do not truly own the game, only a temporary license to play it.”

The post garnered 1,100 comments before moderators decided to lock it, citing a divide between those who believed gamers had ample warning and those who felt they should be able to keep the game regardless of the situation.

While many commenters sympathized with the original poster, an equal number pointed out that the migration process had been ongoing for years and that Microsoft had provided over 12 months’ notice of the impending deadline.
