The Minecraft Movie votes are in and, despite controversy, everyone’s a winner

The excitement surrounding the upcoming sequel, A Minecraft Movie Squared, is palpable as it prepares to welcome back familiar faces like Jack Black and Jason Momoa, who reprise their roles as Steve and Garrett, respectively. Joining them is Kirsten Dunst, taking on the character of Alex. In a bid to celebrate the creativity of its player community, Mojang recently announced a competition during the Minecraft Live showcase, inviting fans to submit their own designs for inclusion in the film.

Community Creativity Takes Center Stage

As the competition unfolded, Mojang carefully selected three standout builds for the final voting round. However, the process encountered a hiccup when players raised concerns about one of the entries. The ‘Tree Village,’ crafted by Ben V., was flagged for using blocks from various biomes, which contradicted the established submission guidelines. In a statement, Mojang expressed appreciation for the effort behind the build but ultimately decided to disqualify it from grand prize consideration.

Rather than dampening the enthusiasm, Mojang turned this setback into an opportunity to showcase even more community talent. The winning design, the ‘Lightning Rod Lighthouse’ by Francisco C.M., will take a prominent place in the film, while the other finalists—the ‘Copper Badlands Castle’ by Rosanna C. and Iola Y.’s ‘Tranquil Taiga Tower’—will also make appearances. Additionally, the Tree Village will still be recognized as an honorable mention, ensuring that its creator receives acknowledgment for their creativity.

The Mojang team expressed their admiration for the submissions, stating, “We were blown away by the talent and creativity of every participant. Narrowing it down to three finalists wasn’t an easy task.” They confirmed that all builds would find a place in the movie or its end credits, highlighting the unique styles that fit seamlessly within their respective biomes.

While the decision to disqualify the Tree Village was not taken lightly, Mojang noted the strong support it received from both the community and the judging panel, including the filmmakers. This led to the decision to include the Tree Village in some capacity, reinforcing Mojang’s commitment to prioritizing community involvement. The team also mentioned that the ‘Tranquil Taiga Tower’ would have advanced to the finals had they identified the biome discrepancies in the Tree Village earlier.

As for how these builds will be integrated into the film, Mojang remains tight-lipped, indicating that “a few small adjustments may be made” to ensure they fit seamlessly into the movie’s narrative. However, they assured fans that the filmmakers are dedicated to preserving the essence and creativity that each build embodies.

A Minecraft Movie Squared is set to hit theaters on July 23, 2027, and anticipation is already building for the creative expressions that will emerge alongside it. As the community eagerly awaits the film’s release, one can’t help but wonder which new trends and memes will capture the imagination of fans in the lead-up to the premiere.
