Warner Bros Acquires Player First Games, Developers of MultiVersus
Player First Games, the creators of the popular game MultiVersus, have been acquired by Warner Bros. In a statement to IGN, David Haddad, president of Warner Bros Games, expressed his excitement about welcoming the talented team to the Warner Bros Games family.
The journey of MultiVersus has been quite a rollercoaster ride. The game was released in July 2022 in open beta and quickly gained a large player base with its platform fighter brawls and the iconic Ultra Instinct Shaggy. However, in March 2023, Player First Games announced that the game had actually been in a prolonged public test and closed the servers, leaving many players surprised.
After a period of silence, Player First Games confirmed its return in March and relaunched the game in May 2024 with new features, characters, and missions. Despite not being the most popular game on Steam, MultiVersus maintains a healthy average of over 4,000 concurrent players on the platform.
Although the game’s relaunch has been well-received, there have been some controversies, such as the option to purchase more lives with real cash, which Player First Games claimed was a bug.
Warner Bros’ acquisition of Player First Games aligns with their focus on the free-to-play space, following disappointing sales from previous titles. Co-founders Tony Huynh and Chris White will continue to lead studio development under Warner Bros Games, with Huynh expressing optimism about the future of MultiVersus.
