Members of the ZeniMax Workers United union have taken a significant step in their ongoing negotiations with Microsoft, casting an “overwhelming” vote in favor of a potential strike. According to a recent press release from the Communications Workers of America, an impressive 94 percent of the bargaining unit has authorized its leadership to initiate strike action if necessary. This decision marks a pivotal moment in the two-year-long contract negotiations with the tech giant.
Voices of the Union
Skylar Hinnant, a senior QA tester and a dedicated member of ZeniMax Workers United, expressed the collective sentiment of the union, stating, “We’re not afraid to use our union power to ensure that we can keep making great games.” Hinnant emphasized the desire for a working environment that upholds dignity and fairness, urging Microsoft to recognize the importance of securing a first contract with the union.
Echoing this sentiment, Zachary Armstrong, also a senior QA tester and fellow union member, highlighted the pressing issues facing workers. “Underpayment and costly RTO initiatives have caused many of us to put our lives on pause because our income does not match even the rising cost of living in the cities where ZeniMax insists we live and work to maintain employment,” he remarked. Armstrong further noted that while none of the workers wished for the situation to escalate to a strike, the union is prepared to demonstrate the true value of their labor if fair wages are not forthcoming.
The ZeniMax Workers United union, which was established in January 2023, represents a growing movement within the gaming industry, advocating for workers’ rights and fair compensation in an evolving landscape. As negotiations continue, the spotlight remains on Microsoft and its response to the union’s demands.
