In a recent post on X, Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Block and co-founder of Twitter, shared his latest venture: an innovative messaging app named Bitchat. The name cleverly merges “bit” and “chat,” steering clear of any unintended interpretations.
Exploring Bitchat’s Unique Features
Bitchat distinguishes itself by utilizing Bluetooth mesh networks, enabling users to communicate without relying on Wi-Fi or cellular networks. This feature is particularly advantageous in environments where connectivity is unreliable, such as crowded music festivals. While typical Bluetooth messaging apps have a range of about 100 meters, Dorsey asserts that Bitchat can extend this distance to an impressive 300 meters, or approximately 984 feet, by relaying messages through connected peers.
The app’s potential for real-world applications is underscored by the success of similar platforms. For instance, Bridgefy, a prominent Bluetooth messaging app, gained traction during pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, where its offline capabilities made it difficult for authorities to monitor communications. Both Bitchat and Bridgefy prioritize user privacy, offering end-to-end encryption to safeguard conversations.
Interestingly, Bridgefy has ties to another Twitter co-founder, Biz Stone, who is among its investors. Dorsey’s foray into Bitchat aligns seamlessly with his long-standing commitment to decentralizing technology. His advocacy for Bitcoin and his initial role in the development of Bluesky—though he is no longer associated with the project—reflect his vision for a more open digital landscape.
Currently, Bitchat is in its beta testing phase, accessible to users through Apple’s TestFlight platform. However, the testing group has reached its limit of 10,000 participants. Dorsey has indicated that the app is still under review, with plans for a broader release on the horizon.
