Meta is removing its Messenger apps for Windows and macOS

Meta is poised to phase out support for its desktop Messenger applications on both Windows and macOS platforms. The company has already removed these applications from the Microsoft Store and Mac App Store, signaling a significant shift in its approach to desktop messaging. Users of the desktop apps have begun receiving notifications indicating that the services will be fully discontinued in December.

According to a support page from Meta, which was initially highlighted by Apple Insider, Mac users will have a grace period of 60 days to utilize the Messenger app before it is completely deprecated. The final cutoff for the Windows Messenger app is set for December 14th, after which users will no longer have access to the application.

This transition means that Windows users will need to rely on either the Facebook app or the web version of Messenger for their communication needs. Meanwhile, macOS users will find themselves limited to the web interface for Messenger interactions. In a related development, Meta is also planning to retire its native WhatsApp application for Windows, opting instead for a web-based version. This move appears to be part of a broader strategy to streamline the development process for WhatsApp.
