Russia’s Digital Hydra Reaches Space With State-Backed MAX Messenger

Russia’s state-backed messaging application, MAX, has made significant strides in its functionality, having facilitated over 1,000 messages between the International Space Station (ISS) and Earth. This information was revealed by Dmitry Bakanov, the head of Roscosmos, during a national event commemorating the anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s historic spaceflight, held from April 6 to 12 in Moscow, as reported by NEWS.ru.

Bakanov emphasized the operational status of MAX in space, noting that cosmonaut Sergey Kud-Sverchkov is utilizing the platform to communicate with the Roscosmos press office. The application’s press service has also indicated that developers of open channels will have the opportunity to create their own sticker packs, with participation already from celebrities and popular bloggers in a trial version of this feature.

The final frontier for MAX

MAX, developed by VK and backed by the Kremlin, has been aggressively promoted through various channels, including mandatory pre-installation on devices sold in Russia. Some state functions reportedly require the use of MAX for verification, and officials have actively encouraged users to transition to this platform following the blocking of WhatsApp in February 2026. Critics, as cited by Reuters, have labeled this rollout as coercive, suggesting that MAX is being positioned as part of a broader “sovereign” communications strategy rather than through traditional market competition.

This initiative aligns with Russia’s overarching goal of promoting domestic digital services through high-visibility state projects. Recently, the country launched its first batch of 16 serial-production satellites for the Rassvet broadband system, which is being marketed as a national alternative to Starlink. However, earlier reports have indicated that Rassvet’s current launch capabilities are limited, highlighting the disparity between the Kremlin’s ambitious goals and the actual infrastructure needed for comprehensive global broadband coverage.
