The introduction of App Pairs in Android 15 marked a significant step forward in multitasking capabilities, allowing users to select two applications for split-screen usage. This feature enabled the addition of a shortcut to the home screen, streamlining the process of activating split-screen mode. However, for users with smaller devices, such as the Pixel 9a, the 50:50 split-screen ratio often proved challenging, as the limited screen real estate made it difficult to effectively utilize both applications.
With the arrival of Android 16, this dynamic has shifted dramatically thanks to enhanced flexibility in split-screen ratios. Users can now opt for configurations such as 70:30 or even 90:10, transforming the multitasking experience. Once accustomed to the 90:10 split, users find that their workflow becomes significantly more fluid.
For instance, one might set up a pairing of Chrome and Gemini, where Chrome occupies 90% of the screen for browsing, while Gemini remains minimized at the bottom for research purposes. This setup allows for seamless transitions; with a single tap, Gemini can be brought to the forefront, allowing for quick shifts back and forth between the two applications. This method is notably more efficient than navigating through Android’s multitasking menu.
How to set up App Pairs with 90:10 split screen multitasking
To create an App Pair and experience this multitasking feature, begin by opening the two applications you wish to pair. Access the multitasking view by swiping up from the Home bar and holding for a moment. Select the name of the first application and choose the Split screen option. Next, select the second application to complete the pairing, which will initially display in a 50:50 split-screen view.
To adjust the split ratio, drag the handle between the two applications all the way up or down to achieve the desired 90:10 split. Alternatively, for a 70:30 configuration, simply leave some extra space for the second app.
After setting up your preferred split-screen view, return to the multitasking menu, tap on one of the app names, and select the Save app pair option. This will create a shortcut on your home screen for easy access to your newly configured app duo. The system even remembers your last used split-screen ratio, further enhancing efficiency by reducing setup time for future sessions.
