Android may make floating ‘bubbles’ useful by letting any app use them

Google has taken a significant step in enhancing user experience on Android devices with the introduction of “bubbles.” Initially designed to keep messaging apps accessible by allowing them to float above other applications, this feature is poised for a major upgrade. Future versions of Android may enable users to run any app within a bubble, expanding the multitasking capabilities of the platform.

Currently, the bubble feature is primarily linked to notifications, providing a convenient way to keep messaging apps visible while engaging with other tasks. However, this functionality has often been overlooked by users. Google appears to be addressing this by developing a new feature that would allow any app to be placed in a bubble, making it just a tap away.

Reports from Android Authority indicate that this feature is likely in the works for Android 16. Interestingly, signs of its functionality were detected in Android 15 QPR1, suggesting that it could be released sooner than anticipated. Users will have the ability to manually add any app to a bubble, creating a seamless multitasking experience.

For Pixel users, this new feature will include a bubble button on the app’s home screen icon, facilitating easy access to the floating window. This enhancement not only promises improved usability but also reflects Google’s commitment to refining the Android experience.

Enhancements for Tablets

In addition to the bubble feature for smartphones, Google is also developing a “bubble bar” specifically for Android tablets. This new interface aims to better organize floating windows, potentially increasing the utility of the bubble feature on larger screens.

While the exact timeline for these updates remains uncertain, the fact that they are fully functional behind the scenes suggests that users may see these enhancements rolled out in a forthcoming QPR release on top of Android 15, well ahead of the anticipated Android 16 launch.
