Chrome WebView’s top bar stuck in light mode when using Google app on Android

Dark Mode Dilemma in the Google App

For those who have embraced the soothing embrace of dark mode on their Android devices, the experience can be unexpectedly jarring when navigating through the Google app. Users are encountering a glaring white address bar that disrupts the otherwise harmonious dark interface, leaving many to wonder about the inconsistency.

This issue appears to be confined solely to the Google app, as users report that both Chrome and WebView maintain their dark aesthetics without interruption. A wave of discussions has emerged on platforms like Reddit and Google forums, where individuals express their frustrations. One user lamented, “I have sensitive eyes and use dark mode comfort shield etc., and out of nowhere Google decides to change the address bar for no apparent reason to a blaring uncomfortable white when everything else is cozy and dark and comfy.”

Another user, equipped with a Pixel 9 Pro XL, noted that the intrusive white bar only appears when accessing links through the Google app, vanishing when they opt to use Gmail or Chrome directly. This has led to a variety of troubleshooting attempts, with users trying everything from clearing caches to uninstalling updates in hopes of resolving the issue. Despite their efforts, the problem persists.

Confusion has arisen regarding whether Chrome itself is to blame. Initially, some users pointed fingers at Chrome, but further investigation revealed that the problem lies within the embedded browser experience of the Google app. Even those who have attempted to uninstall WebView updates or install the latest developer version of Chrome have found no relief. The stubborn white bar remains a constant companion, much to their dismay.

While some have suggested using the Chrome://flags menu to enable dark mode, it’s important to note that these settings apply only to the main Chrome browser and do not influence the Google app’s in-app browser. Attempts to rectify the situation by installing the latest beta version of the Google app have also proven futile.

As it stands, if you find yourself opening web links within the Google app, brace for the unwelcome surprise of that glaring white address bar, regardless of your device’s dark mode settings. The most effective workaround currently available is to manually open those links in Chrome or another browser, a solution that somewhat undermines the convenience of in-app browsing that many users have come to rely on.
