Google is enhancing the functionality of its Gemini assistant, introducing a feature that allows users to make calls and send messages without the need to unlock their devices. This development is part of a broader effort to streamline user interactions with their smartphones.
To access this new capability, users can navigate to Gemini Settings > Gemini on Lock Screen, where they will find an option labeled “Make calls and send messages without unlocking”. This setting is accompanied by a section titled “Outgoing calls and messages,” which clarifies that users must enable their calling and messaging applications within Gemini for these features to function effectively.
In late October, Google began rolling out Gemini Extensions specifically designed for the Phone and Messages apps. Although these extensions are not yet widely available, the new setting provides a fallback option, allowing users to utilize the assistant even if the extensions are not active. In instances where the “without unlocking” feature is unavailable, users are prompted to unlock their devices to proceed.
Once the new setting is enabled, users can place calls seamlessly while their phones remain locked, enhancing convenience and accessibility. However, it is important to note that this feature is still in the rollout phase and may not be accessible to all users immediately. Those interested in trying it out may consider force-stopping the Google app to see if the update has been applied.
Currently, this functionality is being observed with the Google app version 15.48 beta, following a recent server-side update. As Google continues to refine the Gemini assistant, the anticipation surrounding its capabilities grows, promising a more intuitive user experience in the near future.
