What you need to know
- Google is finally bringing back Bluetooth-based automation for Driving Mode on Pixel phones.
- Driving Mode can now trigger when connected to your car’s Bluetooth instead of relying only on motion.
- The update fixes past issues where Driving Mode misfired or failed to activate properly.
For those who have found Android’s Driving Mode lacking in utility due to its cumbersome automation, a welcome change is on the horizon. Google is quietly rolling out an update that promises to enhance the functionality of this feature, making it more user-friendly and practical.
Years ago, Google introduced Modes to the Android ecosystem, revamping the Do Not Disturb feature with preset options like Bedtime and Driving. These modes were designed to filter out unnecessary notifications and calls during times when focus is paramount. However, the Driving Mode has often fallen short, requiring manual activation and sometimes failing to engage when needed. This limitation was particularly frustrating for users, as it could inadvertently activate for passengers rather than the driver.
In a recent update, Google has refined the operation of Driving Mode on Pixel devices. Users can now set the mode to activate automatically upon connecting to their car’s Bluetooth, or when both motion and Bluetooth signals are detected. This shift away from sole reliance on motion detection to a Bluetooth-first approach is a logical enhancement, addressing previous shortcomings.
This new feature was identified in version 26.05.32 of Google Play Services and is currently being rolled out. If you haven’t yet seen the update, a quick visit to the Play Store to refresh Google Play Services may be in order.
To configure this new functionality, simply navigate to the Settings app, select Modes, and tap on Driving. Ensure it is enabled, then activate the While driving toggle. From there, you can choose between Use Bluetooth or Use motion and Bluetooth, depending on your preference. Once set, Do Not Disturb will automatically engage based on your selected criteria.

Android Central’s Take
This development raises an interesting question: what took Google so long? While Samsung has already streamlined the process by allowing Driving Mode to activate seamlessly with Android Auto, Google had yet to offer a comparable native solution. Fortunately, Pixel users are now on the cusp of enjoying a similar level of convenience, enhancing their driving experience significantly.
