New Features in Android Auto
The latest beta version of the Android Auto app, v17.6.663424, introduces several exciting enhancements. Among these are a new weather animation and support for Quick Settings tiles. However, the most notable change is the testing of a new user interface for Google Maps within Android Auto.
Traditionally, the Google Maps interface has featured a light background with a teal turn indicator in the top right corner. While this design has its merits, it can be somewhat distracting on larger, brightly lit infotainment screens. In response to user feedback, Google is experimenting with a darker map surface and a dark-gray turn indicator, aiming to create a more cohesive and less distracting visual experience.
In addition to these changes, Google is also exploring enhancements for users who prefer dark mode. The company appears to be testing a significantly darker map surface, along with a shift from the teal turn indicator to a more subdued dark gray. This adjustment is particularly beneficial for nighttime driving, as the current map colors may be too bright for comfortable viewing in low-light conditions.
While Google frequently conducts A/B tests on various UI elements and color schemes, the current situation presents a bit of ambiguity. The map display in Android Auto typically reflects the Google Maps app installed on the user’s connected device. However, the new darker color scheme does not appear to be visible on connected Android phones, suggesting that it may be an exclusive feature for Android Auto at this stage.
