Google Play Store to Drop Android Instant Apps in December 2025

The Google Play Store is set to phase out support for Android Instant apps, a feature that has allowed users to explore applications without the need for installation. A recent message uncovered in the latest Canary build of Android Studio, shared by developer Leon Omelan and reported by Android Authority, indicates that this support will officially conclude in December 2025.

The notification states, “Instant Apps support will be removed by Google Play in December 2025. Publishing and all Google Play Instant APIs will no longer work. Tooling support will be removed in Android Studio Otter Feature Drop.”

In a bid to enhance user experience and app engagement, Google first unveiled Android Instant apps in 2017. This innovative approach enabled developers to break down their applications into modular components, allowing users to download and run only the necessary parts without a full installation. Initially, Google highlighted a significant interest from developers, noting the potential for increased engagement.

However, the landscape has shifted. In a conversation with The Verge, Google spokesperson Nia Carter pointed out that consumer interest in Instant apps has waned. “Usage and engagement of Instant Apps have been low, and developers are leveraging other tools for app discovery such as AI-powered app highlights and simultaneous app installs,” she explained. “This change allows us to invest more in the tools that are working well for developers, and help direct users to full app downloads to foster deeper engagement.”
