Google TV’s Freeplay app, which made its debut on the Google TV Streamer, began its rollout to additional devices across the United States in September. However, shortly after its launch, the app was removed from the interface due to an unforeseen issue.
Temporary Setback for Freeplay App
As reported by 9to5Google, the Freeplay app is currently only accessible on Google’s flagship streaming box. Fortunately, this isn’t the end of the road for the app. In a statement provided to the outlet, Google acknowledged the situation, explaining that they “discovered an issue that can increase crashes for some” users. Consequently, the company has temporarily disabled the app on affected devices until a resolution is implemented.
While rolling out the new Google TV Freeplay guide, we discovered an issue that can increase crashes for some users. We have disabled access to the new guide on affected devices until the fix is in place. The fix will begin rolling out soon, and the updated guide will be available for all Google TV devices in the coming months.
Despite the setback, users can still enjoy free channels on the platform. The Freeplay app enhances the experience by simplifying the browsing of over 150 options available on Google TV. The updated app features a more user-friendly interface, allowing users to sort content by genre, personal recommendations, and a dedicated Favorites category.
Google has indicated that the fix is on the horizon, aiming to restore the unified free channels guide before the holiday season. For those who have yet to experience the revamped app, it is expected to be available on supported devices in the coming months.
