New Mexico has embraced the digital age, allowing its residents to store their driver’s licenses and state IDs in Google Wallet. This initiative positions New Mexico as the sixth state to adopt this innovative technology, following in the footsteps of California, which joined the movement in August, along with Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, and Maryland.
While the convenience of digital IDs is undeniable, it is important to note that physical identification remains essential for law enforcement interactions and age verification. Nevertheless, an increasing number of businesses and TSA checkpoints are utilizing the NM Verifier app for smartphone-based verification, streamlining the identification process.
In addition to state IDs, Google Wallet is set to introduce digital passport IDs in the near future. This feature aims to enhance the travel experience by allowing users to store a digital version of their U.S. passport within the app, facilitating smoother passage through select TSA checkpoints.
To create a digital U.S. passport ID in Google Wallet, users simply need to select the option to “create an ID pass with your U.S. passport” and follow the straightforward on-screen instructions. However, until digital IDs gain broader acceptance, Google advises travelers to continue carrying their physical IDs, especially during trips.
For those planning domestic flights using a digital passport, it is wise to consult the TSA’s map of supported states and airports to ensure a seamless travel experience.
