In recent weeks, users of the Google Wallet app on Android have encountered a notable change: the requirement to grant location permissions in order to access “detailed receipts” that include merchant addresses and maps. This shift, implemented in late July or early August, has altered the way transaction information is presented.
Previously, detailed receipts were automatically generated, showcasing not only the merchant name but also a map pinpointing the location of the transaction. However, users have reported that their recent transactions now display only the cost, date, statement, and transaction ID, with the map feature conspicuously absent.
Instead of the familiar map, a prompt now appears stating, “Get detailed receipts, like merchant name and address, for future tap to pay transactions.” This change encourages users to enable location settings to regain access to the comprehensive receipt features.
For those looking to restore the map functionality, tapping on “Set up location settings” guides users through the process of enabling “Precise location” permission while using the app. To initiate this, one must select a card and open the most recent receipt. However, it’s worth noting that enabling location permissions does not retroactively apply to past transactions; receipts from previous payments will not gain the map feature even after permissions are granted.
While this adjustment may enhance privacy by explicitly requesting location permissions, it would have been beneficial for Google Wallet to notify users of this change in advance. Such communication could have allowed users to enable the necessary settings before missing out on the map feature for their last few transactions.
