What you need to know
In an exciting development for Pixel phone users, Android 16 is set to introduce a comprehensive Battery Health page, providing essential performance data. This new feature will present users with an estimated battery capacity displayed as a real-time percentage, allowing for a straightforward comparison to a brand-new battery.
- Only the Pixel 8a and newer models will be equipped with this valuable feature, as confirmed by Google.
- The Battery Health page aims to enhance user understanding of battery performance over time.
Google has announced that the Battery Health statistics page will be integrated into the Settings app for Pixel phones running Android 16. However, it is important to note that this feature will be exclusive to the Pixel 8a and the upcoming Pixel 9 series, including the 9 Pro Fold. This leaves earlier models, such as the rest of the Pixel 8 series and the original Pixel Fold, without access to this enhancement.
A Google representative clarified in a response to an Issue Tracker ticket that the feature is currently available in Beta 3 for the Pixel 8a and Pixel 9 devices. The statement emphasized that “due to product limitations, this feature will not be available on older in-market Pixel devices.”
While newer Google Pixel devices have already provided users with cycle count data since last year, the forthcoming Battery Health page promises to deliver more detailed analytics. Users will be able to see their battery capacity represented as a percentage relative to its original state, offering a clear picture of daily performance, even years after purchase.
The Battery Health page will feature a green checkmark alongside a Normal status indicator if the battery is functioning optimally. Additionally, it will include quick links to relevant support articles and highlight any enabled charging optimization features, such as Adaptive Charging.
Although the specifics behind the “product limitations” preventing older Pixel models from accessing the Battery Health page remain unclear, it may relate to the batteries themselves. Starting with the Pixel 8a, Google claims that these devices can endure up to 1,000 charge cycles before requiring a battery replacement. In contrast, older models, including the Pixel 3 through Pixel 8 Pro and Pixel Fold, are rated for a maximum of 800 charge cycles before a replacement is advised.
