For many users, the Pixel line of smartphones has become synonymous with timely access to the latest Android features. This trend continues with the introduction of a particularly useful feature known as App Freeze, designed to help users manage storage more effectively.
With a Pixel 9 Pro boasting 256GB of storage, one might assume that ample space is available for applications and their accompanying data. However, it quickly becomes apparent that even this generous capacity can be consumed at an alarming rate, leaving users grappling with limited storage. In response to this challenge, Google has introduced the App Freeze feature, which offers a streamlined solution for managing app storage.
What is App Freeze?
App Freeze functions by archiving applications that are not frequently used, along with the data they have accumulated. Once an app is archived, it becomes temporarily unavailable for use until reactivated. This process not only frees up valuable storage space but also eliminates unnecessary files, retaining only a minimal fragment of the original app.
Users no longer need to manually sift through their app lists to identify candidates for deletion. Instead, Android will automatically archive apps that have not been utilized for a certain period. Archived apps are easily identifiable by a small cloud icon that appears alongside their launcher in the App Drawer or home screen. To restore an archived app, users simply need to tap it, and all associated data will remain intact.
New Pixel devices running Android 15 come with the App Freeze feature enabled by default. However, it may not be immediately obvious where to find this functionality, as it is labeled as “Manage app if unused” within the settings menu.
Enable/disable App Freeze
To utilize the App Freeze feature, users will need a Pixel phone operating on Android 15. It is anticipated that this feature will soon be available on other devices as well, so users should remain vigilant for updates.
To get started, open the Settings app by pulling down the Notification Shade twice and tapping the gear icon located in the bottom-right corner. From there, navigate to the Apps section.
Within the Apps menu, select “See all X apps,” where X represents the total number of installed applications. Scroll through the list to find the app you wish to archive.
There are two methods to archive an app: allowing Android to manage the process automatically after a designated period of inactivity or opting for manual archiving. To enable archiving, scroll to the bottom of the app’s page and ensure the On/Off slider for “Manage app if unused” is set to the On position.
While most apps should already have App Freeze enabled, users may want to verify this setting for less frequently used apps. This allows for easy archiving without the hassle of uninstalling and reinstalling later.
Once an app is archived, the cloud icon will appear over its launcher, signifying its new status. To unarchive the app, simply tap and launch it, and it will return to its previous state.
The App Freeze feature on Android 15 presents a practical solution for users seeking to optimize their device’s storage. As this functionality continues to roll out, it promises to alleviate the common struggle of managing app-related storage consumption.
