Microsoft warns that Android 15 will make Windows Phone Link worse

Windows Phone Link, a standout feature of Windows 11, is poised to face challenges following the recent Android 15 update. This update introduces a new protocol from Google that automatically redacts sensitive notifications from being sent to “untrusted” notification listeners, which will impact the functionality of Phone Link on various devices.

Changes in Notification Syncing

Microsoft has proactively alerted users about the implications of the latest Android OS update, indicating that certain notifications will no longer be accessible through Phone Link. This includes critical items such as two-factor authentication (2FA) codes and other sensitive alerts. The warning, prominently displayed within the Phone Link app, serves as a heads-up for those affected.

According to tech analyst Mishaal Rahman, devices that come pre-installed with Link To Windows should still be able to sync sensitive notifications, provided they are configured correctly by both Microsoft and the device manufacturer. For instance, Samsung Galaxy AI devices remain capable of syncing these notifications seamlessly.

However, users of devices that do not come equipped with Phone Link face a different reality. For those utilizing smartphones like the Google Pixel, Sony Xperia, or Nothing Phone, the ability to view 2FA codes and other sensitive notifications through Windows Phone Link will be lost upon upgrading to Android 15.

Originally launched as Your Phone with Windows 10, Phone Link has evolved into a robust feature that allows users to access their phone’s notifications, applications, messages, and calls directly from their computer. This integration minimizes the need to reach for a phone while engaged in tasks on a Windows device. Recent enhancements have even enabled users to utilize their phone’s camera as a webcam and synchronize files between their PC and phone via File Explorer.

While Phone Link remains a powerful tool for many, the adjustments brought about by Android 15 may diminish its utility for a significant number of users, prompting a reevaluation of how they interact with their devices in a connected environment.
